The San Francisco 49ers have been busy reshaping their roster as they announced the signing of DL Sebastian Joseph-Day and OL Matt Pryor to one-year deals. In order to make room for the new additions, the team has waived RB Jeremy McNichols. Additionally, the 49ers have made further moves by signing OL Sebastian Gutierrez and WR Willie Snead IV to the practice squad and opening the practice window for WR Danny Gray, who is currently on the Injured Reserve List.
Joseph-Day, a 28-year-old native of Stroudsburg, PA, was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Throughout his five-year NFL career with the Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, Joseph-Day has proven himself on the field. He has appeared in 69 games, with 68 of them as a starter, and has an impressive stat line of 225 tackles, 11.0 sacks, and 21 tackles for loss. In addition, he has contributed to the passing defense with five passes defensed, one interception, and has forced two fumbles while recovering one. Joseph-Day has also showcased his skills in the postseason, appearing in four contests and adding 11 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and one pass defensed.
Pryor, also 28 years old and originally drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, brings his experience to the 49ers. Throughout his five-year NFL career with the Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and now the 49ers, Pryor has appeared in 73 regular-season games, with 24 starts. In 2023 alone, Pryor played in 13 games with the 49ers before being waived on December 25. He has also started in one postseason contest. Standing at 6-7 and weighing 332 pounds, Pryor's size and versatility are assets to the offensive line.
Sebastian Gutierrez, a 25-year-old from Pasco, WA, has had an eventful NFL journey so far. After signing with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2022, Gutierrez has spent time on the practice squads of the New England Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders, and Kansas City Chiefs. He has appeared in one game with the Raiders and recently signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs before being released. Now, Gutierrez finds himself with an opportunity to showcase his skills on the 49ers' practice squad.
Wide receiver Willie Snead IV has been released by the team on December 26, but his contributions during his time with the 49ers will not be forgotten. Additionally, running back Jeremy McNichols, originally signed to the team's practice squad in September 2023, has been waived after appearing in two games with the 49ers.
With these roster moves, the San Francisco 49ers are continuing to strengthen their team as they navigate the NFL season. The addition of DL Sebastian Joseph-Day and OL Matt Pryor, along with the signings of Sebastian Gutierrez and Willie Snead IV to the practice squad, demonstrate the team's commitment to building a competitive roster. As the new players settle in and prepare for their roles, fans eagerly anticipate seeing their impact on the field in the coming games.
