In a surprising turn of events, former Washington Huskies assistant coach, Ryan Grubb, has decided to forgo a deal with Alabama and return to the state of Washington. Grubb will be taking on the role of offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks, as reported by NFL Network.
Grubb had been instrumental in constructing the highly successful offense for the Washington Huskies over the past couple of seasons. It was widely speculated that he would join his former head coach, Kalen DeBoer, at Alabama. In fact, Grubb reportedly informed Alabama boosters of his intentions to guide the Crimson Tide offense beginning in 2024, just three days ago.
However, the unexpected development sees Grubb now joining the Seattle Seahawks as they search for a new offensive coordinator. The position became vacant after Shane Waldron departed to accept the same role with the Chicago Bears.
With his background in developing successful college offenses, Grubb will now likely work under first-year Seahawks coach, Mike Macdonald. Macdonald, previously the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, is now the youngest head coach in the NFL.
This move to the Seahawks marks Grubb's first coaching job in the NFL, after spending five seasons in various assistant coaching roles with Fresno State. Notably, Grubb coached quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who transferred to Washington in 2022. Penix Jr. is projected to attract attention from multiple NFL teams with high selections in this year's draft.
With veteran quarterback Geno Smith currently under contract with the Seahawks for 2024, Grubb's arrival may indicate the team's intention to build for the future by potentially drafting a younger quarterback. Smith's uneven performance in the 2023 campaign could serve as motivation for Seattle to find a new signal-caller to lead their offense.
The decision by Grubb to join the Seattle Seahawks has undoubtedly sparked intrigue and anticipation among fans and analysts alike. It remains to be seen how his expertise and coaching style will impact the Seahawks' offensive game plan in the upcoming seasons.
