Pro Bowl Linebacker Darius Leonard Hits Waivers, Potential Landing Spots Emerge

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard, a decorated player known for his exceptional performance on the field, has hit waivers and can now be claimed by any team in the league. Leonard, who arrived in Indianapolis in 2018 as a second-round draft pick out of South Carolina State, immediately made an impact and went on to win Defensive Rookie of the Year after leading the league in tackles.
However, in recent seasons Leonard has been plagued by injuries, limiting his playing time and affecting his effectiveness on the field. In 2022, he was only able to play in three games due to offseason back surgery and a subsequent concussion. A setback with his back injury led to him being placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season in Week 10.
Despite his injury history, Leonard has managed to start in nine games for the Colts this season, recording 65 tackles. Now that he is on waivers, any team claiming him would owe him approximately $6 million in base salary for the rest of the season. However, given his hefty contract and subsequent cap hit totals in the coming years, it is likely that he will clear waivers and become a free agent, allowing him to sign a more manageable deal with a team of his choosing.
Several teams have emerged as potential landing spots for Leonard. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been dealing with a decimated linebacker room due to injuries, could greatly benefit from Leonard's skills and experience. With key players like Myles Jack, Cole Holcomb, and Kwon Alexander sidelined, Leonard could compete for a starting job or provide much-needed stability in the rotation for the Steelers.
The Buffalo Bills, who have suffered various injuries throughout their defense, including to linebackers Matt Milano and Tremaine Edmunds, could also be interested in Leonard to bolster their linebacker corps. With Tyrel Dodson and Terrel Bernard currently starting, Leonard could provide valuable depth and rotational options for the team.
The Philadelphia Eagles, a Super Bowl contender, appear to be an attractive landing spot for Leonard if he becomes a free agent. With the current linebacker duo of Zach Cunningham and Nicholas Morrow, the addition of Leonard would create an ideal complement and strengthen the position group for a deep postseason run. Head coach Nick Sirianni, who previously worked with Leonard as the offensive coordinator for the Colts, is familiar with his capabilities and could utilize him effectively.
Lastly, there is a potential reunion in store for Leonard with the Chicago Bears. Head coach Matt Eberflus, who was Leonard's defensive coordinator during his rookie season and his most productive years in the league, could reignite the magic between them. However, if Leonard is aiming for a deep playoff run, the Bears may not be the best fit.
As Leonard's fate is determined in the waiver process, teams across the league will be assessing their needs and considering the potential impact he could bring to their respective rosters. With his proven track record as a Pro Bowl linebacker and the ability to significantly strengthen a team's defense, it remains to be seen where Leonard will land next.
