In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to part ways with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky after just two seasons, according to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo. The team confirmed the decision, stating that it was a mutual agreement. Trubisky, a seven-year pro, had two years remaining on his contract but no guaranteed money, making his departure understandable.

Trubisky's time with the Steelers failed to solidify his spot in the roster over the past two campaigns. He had his ups and downs, but ultimately struggled to make a significant impact. As a starter, he posted a 2-5 record in 12 appearances, throwing for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, with a QB rating of 77.6.

Alongside Trubisky, the Steelers also released offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor and punter Pressley Harvin III. These moves will clear approximately $13 million in salary cap space for the team.

The release of Trubisky marks the first significant offseason move for the Pittsburgh quarterback room. Kenny Pickett, a first-rounder in the 2022 draft, remains, but his struggles in his sophomore season have left the starting QB position uncertain. Pickett sat behind Mason Rudolph towards the end of the season, but Rudolph is set to become a free agent.

There are speculations that the Steelers might explore the option of signing Ryan Tannehill, with the recent addition of Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator. This suggests that Trubisky will likely be competing for a roster spot and hoping to secure a backup role in the upcoming summer.

Trubisky, famously known as the player drafted ahead of Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft, will now face the challenge of finding another opportunity for a career revival. Although he still possesses mobility and experience, it remains uncertain if he will receive another chance at reclamation as he did with the Steelers.

This move by the Steelers hints at a potential shake-up in their quarterback situation, as they aim to find stability and success for the upcoming season.
