The Pittsburgh Pirates are reportedly on the brink of hiring Sarah Gelles as their new assistant general manager, according to a source close to the situation. The team has not yet officially confirmed the appointment, but MLB.com's Mark Feinsand revealed the news.
Gelles brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent the previous five years in the research and development department of the Houston Astros. She even held the position of director within the department since December 2019. Gelles played an instrumental role in the Astros' success, as the team achieved remarkable triumphs during her tenure, including four division titles, two American League pennants, and one World Series victory.
The Philadelphia native has an extensive background of over a decade working in front offices of Major League Baseball teams. Gelles devoted a significant portion of her career to the Baltimore Orioles, where she was employed from 2011 to 2018. Initially serving as the club's coordinator of baseball analytics from 2012 to 2014, she eventually rose to the position of director of baseball analytics in her final three years with the Orioles. This elevation saw her overseeing the team's analytics department and leading the development of internal baseball operations systems. Additionally, Gelles was responsible for major league roster management and provided support to then-general manager Dan Duquette in player acquisitions, negotiations, and other facets of baseball operations.
Interestingly, Gelles' acceptance of the assistant general manager role with the Pirates holds a special significance. She began her career in baseball operations as an intern with the team in 2009, making this her reunion with the organization. Furthermore, Gelles fulfilled an internship in MLB's labor relations department in 2010, showcasing her dedication to building a well-rounded understanding of the industry.
If the appointment is confirmed, Gelles will undoubtedly bring her vast expertise and data-driven approach to the Pirates' front office. With her impressive track record of success and experience working in esteemed organizations, the franchise hopes that Gelles will play a pivotal role in charting a path to future achievements.
