FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots have made a significant roster move, announcing the release of quarterback Malik Cunningham and defensive lineman Trey Flowers.

Malik Cunningham, 25, joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent from Louisville on May 12, 2023. Despite being released on August 29, Cunningham's talents were recognized, and he was signed to the practice squad a day later. On October 14, he was promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Cunningham made his NFL debut on October 15, showcasing his versatility by playing both quarterback and wide receiver. During his college career, he amassed an impressive 9,660 yards passing, with 70 touchdown passes, and tallied 3,179 rushing yards with 50 rushing touchdowns.

Trey Flowers, 30, was brought on board by the Patriots on August 8, 2023, but unfortunately, his time with the team was cut short. Shortly after his arrival, he was placed on the Reserve/PUP List on August 30. Flowers is a seasoned NFL veteran, having played eight seasons with the Patriots from 2015 to 2018, followed by stints with the Detroit Lions from 2019 to 2021 and the Miami Dolphins in 2022. At 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds, Flowers was originally drafted in the fourth round (101st overall) by the Patriots in the 2015 NFL Draft. During his career, he has notched 265 total tackles, 31½ sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries in 79 regular-season games, with 64 starts. In the postseason, Flowers has shown his playmaking ability, with 39 total tackles and 5½ sacks in nine games, all with the Patriots.

The decision to release Cunningham and Flowers reflects the Patriots' ongoing evaluation of their roster and the need to make adjustments ahead of the upcoming season.
