Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins will miss the remainder of the season after an MRI confirmed a torn Achilles tendon sustained during their 24-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The injury occurred early in the fourth quarter when Cousins attempted to scramble in the pocket but suddenly pulled up in pain. He was brought down by Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark and had to be carted off the field.
The Vikings' worst fears were confirmed by the MRI results obtained on Monday at Twin Cities Orthopedics. The team will determine the timeline and details of Cousins' upcoming surgery later this week, and updates will be provided accordingly. The 35-year-old signal-caller, who has never missed a game due to injury in his 12-season NFL career, finished the season with 2,057 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Following the game on Sunday, Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell expressed pride in Cousins, emphasizing his performance throughout the season. O'Connell stated, "Whatever is the case, if we don't have him for one snap or for the duration of our season, that will not change the fact of what I believe Kirk Cousins, the level he played to this year and ultimately what he's meant to me and our organization."
With Cousins sidelined, the Vikings are expected to turn to rookie Jaren Hall as their starting quarterback in the immediate future. The fifth-round draft pick out of BYU made his NFL debut during Sunday's game, completing three of four passes for 23 yards. Hall, who threw for 3,171 yards and 31 touchdowns last season with BYU, will face a major test as he leads the team going forward.
The loss of Cousins comes at a crucial time for the Vikings, who have won their last three games and currently sit in second place in the NFC North. Their next matchup will be against the Atlanta Falcons in Georgia. As Cousins recovers from his injury, the team will have to rely on the talent and leadership of their roster to maintain their momentum and compete for a playoff spot.
Cousins, who will be a free agent next offseason, was recently at the center of trade rumors but swiftly shut down the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause. His absence for the rest of the season will undoubtedly have implications for his future with the Vikings organization. However, for now, the focus will be on his recovery and the team's pursuit of postseason success without their starting quarterback.
