In a move aimed at bringing stability and experience to the organization, the Las Vegas Raiders have hired former Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco as their new GM, according to team and league sources.
The decision comes after Raiders owner Mark Davis expressed concerns about pairing a first-time head coach with a first-time general manager. Davis cited the previous unsuccessful stint when former GM Reggie McKenzie hired Dennis Allen as head coach in 2012, resulting in a disappointing record and Allen being fired.
Davis's initial plan was to hire a GM before finalizing the head coach position. However, after officially announcing Antonio Pierce as the head coach last week, Davis grew wary of having another first-time pairing. As a result, he took the weekend to contemplate his options and ultimately settled on Telesco after a second interview on Monday.
Telesco brings a wealth of experience to the Raiders, having spent the past 11 seasons overseeing the Chargers' personnel department. While his tenure with the Chargers ended without reaching the ultimate goal, Telesco proved himself as a talented talent evaluator. He drafted notable players such as Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa, Derwin James, and Justin Herbert. Telesco also made impactful signings and trades, including acquiring Khalil Mack.
Nevertheless, Telesco had his share of misses, particularly in overlooking the offensive line and depth-building in the later rounds of the draft. However, starting afresh under new ownership is expected to bring revitalization to his approach.
Telesco's hiring marks the fourth GM under Davis's ownership since 2011, as the Raiders seek to address a decade-long struggle with drafting, free-agent signings, and trades. With the responsibility now falling on Telesco's shoulders, the franchise hopes for a turnaround and an end to the tumultuous period.
Interim GM Champ Kelly, who was rumored to be one of the leading contenders, remains under contract but will likely not be retained in his previous role. This leaves Kelly's future uncertain, as he has not interviewed for any other GM vacancies with the Chargers and New England Patriots, who are the only two teams currently without a GM.
The Raiders' decision to prioritize experience with the hiring of Telesco reflects their determination to establish stability and make informed decisions for the franchise's future. With Telesco's track record and vast knowledge gained from his 33 seasons in the league, the Raiders are hopeful that they have found the right leader to guide them towards success once again.
