The Atlanta Falcons have wasted no time in their search for a new head coach following the dismissal of Arthur Smith. The team has sent out a total of six interview requests to various candidates, according to recent reports.
Among the list of requested interviews is Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has been highly sought-after by multiple teams. Despite his relative lack of experience as a coordinator, Johnson has led the Detroit offense to impressive performances and has caught the attention of the Panthers, Chargers, and Commanders as well.
The Falcons are also interested in Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, who has been connected to several openings this offseason. While the Bengals' offense faced its fair share of challenges, Callahan's potential as a coach has not gone unnoticed. The other candidates on the Falcons' radar all come from defensive backgrounds, including Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Ravens defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, and Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
Glenn has garnered interest from the Chargers, Titans, and Commanders, despite his defense not matching the effectiveness of Johnson's Lions. Weaver, who has experience as a coordinator with the Texans, has received an interview request from the Commanders, adding to his list of potential suitors. Wilks, who previously served as the Panthers' interim head coach, has impressed with his work in San Francisco, leading the 49ers' defense to top-10 finishes in both points and yards allowed.
Morris, who had a previous stint as interim head coach for the Falcons, has made a strong case for himself during his tenure as the Rams' defensive coordinator. His success has put him back on the head coaching radar this offseason.
While there have been rumors of the Falcons' interest in high-profile coaches like Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick, no interviews have been confirmed as of yet. However, with a growing list of candidates to interview, Atlanta is certainly leaving no stone unturned in their search for a new leader.
The Falcons, who finished the 2023 season with a 7-10 record, are eager to take a step forward and regain their competitiveness in the 2024 season and beyond. With a number of talented coaching candidates in the mix, the team hopes to find the right person to guide them back to success.
