In a surprising turn of events, Dalvin Cook has become a highly sought-after player as playoff contenders look to bolster their backfield for a potential Super Bowl run. The former New York Jets running back, who was released by the team, presents a fresh set of legs and a wealth of experience that could prove invaluable in the postseason.
Cook's tenure with the Jets was marred by limited opportunities and frustration. Throughout the season, his role gradually diminished, with the opener being the only game in which he received double-digit carries. As the weeks went on, Cook's playing time dwindled, playing no more than 36% of the offensive snaps.
Back in October, Cook expressed his frustration over his lack of touches and even contemplated a possible trade. However, no deal came to fruition, leaving him eager to prove himself elsewhere.
In what turned out to be Cook's final game with the Jets in Week 16, he saw only five snaps (6%). To further emphasize his dwindling role, he was a healthy scratch in their recent loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Now, with the playoffs approaching, various teams have emerged as potential landing spots for the talented running back. One team that initially showed interest in Cook upon his release from the Jets was the Dallas Cowboys. Given their struggles in finding a solid rhythm in their running game this season, Cook could provide a much-needed boost alongside Tony Pollard. The Cowboys are averaging just 4.1 yards per carry and currently rank outside the top 10 in rushing yards per game.
Another team in the hunt for Cook is the Baltimore Ravens, who lead the league in rushing yards but have faced injuries to key running backs J.K. Dobbins and Keaton Mitchell. Cook's arrival would deepen their depleted unit and further strengthen their chances of winning the Super Bowl.
The Miami Dolphins, while already having emerging talent in De'Von Achane, could benefit from Cook's experience and skills. Raheem Mostert, who has been instrumental for the Dolphins with 21 total touchdowns this season, has been battling knee and ankle injuries in recent weeks. Adding Cook to the mix could help fortify their backfield for the postseason.
The San Francisco 49ers also present an intriguing option for Cook. With Christian McCaffrey commanding the primary role in the backfield, Cook would play a complementary role. However, the Niners' offense, known for its running back-friendly system under Kyle Shanahan, could give Cook his best chance at winning the Super Bowl. McCaffrey's mild calf strain could potentially motivate the 49ers to secure Cook as insurance.
Lastly, reuniting with former offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski could be an enticing prospect for Cook. Stefanski, now the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, oversaw Cook's impressive 2019 season with the Minnesota Vikings, where he accumulated 1,654 scrimmage yards and 13 touchdowns. Despite the Browns' ability to stay competitive in the absence of Nick Chubb due to a knee injury, Cook's addition could elevate the team's postseason aspirations.
As the NFL regular season concludes and playoffs loom, Dalvin Cook has emerged as a hot commodity in the league. With a multitude of playoff contenders vying for his services, it will be interesting to see where Cook lands and how he impacts the postseason race.
