TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon put an end to speculation on Wednesday, confirming that Kyler Murray will be the team's starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
Gannon's remarks came during a news conference, where he expressed his unwavering belief in Murray's abilities, both on and off the field. The coach stated that ever since he was hired in February, he had full confidence in Murray as the team's franchise quarterback.
"I've been convicted since I got here," Gannon said confidently. "What the guy's done for us, the player that he is, the person that he is, the competitor that he is, I kind of chuckled. That's been my view for, since I got here."
Gannon further praised Murray's commitment to the team and his willingness to go above and beyond. The coach stated that Murray has consistently exceeded his expectations and has embraced all responsibilities asked of him since Gannon joined the coaching staff.
The coach also highlighted the strong bond he has developed with Murray, particularly during the quarterback's rehabilitation from a torn ACL he suffered in December 2022. The two have been closely working together, studying game films on their plane rides and engaging in regular phone conversations to discuss strategies and plays.
Murray, speaking in November about his relationship with Gannon, highlighted the trust and mutual respect that has grown between them. The quarterback emphasized that Gannon's willingness to involve him in decision-making and seeking his opinion on the game meant a lot to him.
"It's the relationship we've got, man," Murray said. "Anytime. If I'm watching the game or if he's watching the game or if he's got something on his mind about something he wants to run by me. I love the fact that he feels--he doesn't have to tell me anything--the fact that he comes to me and just thinks that my opinion matters means a lot. It's a relationship that we've built. He trusts me and I trust him, so it's been great."
Gannon expressed surprise at the public doubt surrounding Murray's future as the Cardinals' starting quarterback for the next season. Despite this doubt, the coach asserted that Murray's outstanding contributions and their strong rapport left no room for decision-making uncertainty.
As the 2023 NFL season approaches, the Arizona Cardinals can rest assured that they have a talented and trusted quarterback in Kyler Murray leading their offense.
