According to reports, two assistants from coach Kyle Shanahan's staff with the San Francisco 49ers have interviewed for the offensive coordinator position with the New Orleans Saints. Quarterbacks coach Brian Griese and offensive passing game specialist Klint Kubiak recently had interviews with Saints coach Dennis Allen, as reported by New Orleans journalist Nick Underhill.
The Saints made the decision to part ways with longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael after finishing the season with a 9-8 record and missing out on the NFC playoffs for the third consecutive year. In their search for a new coordinator, the Saints have expressed interest in Griese and Kubiak, both of whom are currently part of the 49ers' coaching staff.
In the past, the 49ers have been known to block coaches in coordinator positions from interviewing for similar jobs elsewhere. However, the Saints have been granted permission to speak with Griese and Kubiak, indicating the organization's willingness to allow their coaches to pursue career advancements.
Griese, who joined the 49ers as quarterbacks coach in his second year, previously had a two-year stint as an ESPN analyst on Monday Night Football. In his first season with the team, Griese played a crucial role in helping quarterback Brock Purdy elevate from the third-string position to becoming a productive starter towards the end of the previous season.
Kubiak, on the other hand, is in his first season with the 49ers, having previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2022 and the Minnesota Vikings in 2021. Shanahan hired Kubiak to replace Bobby Slowik, who moved on to become the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans last year. Slowik had spent one season as the 49ers' passing game coordinator before assuming the role of an offensive pass game specialist.
The interviews conducted by the Saints suggest that both Griese and Kubiak have garnered attention for their coaching abilities, and the potential opportunity to join the Saints' coaching staff could be a significant step forward in their careers.
It remains to be seen which candidate the Saints will ultimately choose to fill their vacant offensive coordinator position.
