In a stunning turn of events, actress Gina Carano has filed a lawsuit against entertainment giants Disney and Lucasfilm, claiming discrimination and wrongful termination. The lawsuit comes after Carano's firing from the hit series The Mandalorian and seeks to recast her role. Notably, tech magnate Elon Musk is reportedly assisting in funding Carano's legal battle through his company X, as part of his commitment to supporting individuals who claim discrimination based on their online activities.
Carano's complaint, filed in California federal court, alleges that she was terminated due to expressing her right-wing opinions on social media. She is seeking a court order that would compel Lucasfilm to recast her in the show. Carano's accusations raise questions about corporate influence over Hollywood and freedom of speech in the entertainment industry.
Lucasfilm had previously announced Carano's departure from The Mandalorian after she shared a controversial post likening being a Republican to being Jewish during the Holocaust. This was just one instance in a series of posts where Carano's right-wing positions ignited backlash on social media. The actress had previously faced criticism for mocking mask-wearing mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic and promoting claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Carano's lawsuit claims that Disney and Lucasfilm harassed and defamed her for not conforming to their viewpoints on issues such as Black Lives Matter, preferred pronouns, and election interference. She argues that her termination was based on her cultural and religious beliefs, while male co-stars allegedly made offensive posts targeting Republicans without facing consequences.
According to the complaint, Disney demanded that Carano meet with representatives from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination and issue a public apology. When she refused, Carano was allegedly instructed to attend a meeting with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and 45 employees who identify as LGBTQ+. Carano declined the meeting and was subsequently terminated from The Mandalorian and other Star Wars titles, including Rangers of the New Republic.
Carano's lawsuit includes claims of wrongful discharge and sex discrimination. In addition to seeking the recasting of her role, she is requesting at least $75,000 in damages, as well as punitive damages. In a statement, Carano expressed gratitude for X's support, stating that she sees it as a beacon of hope for free speech.
Last year, Elon Musk made a promise to fund legal action for X users who believed they faced discrimination from their employers due to their activities on the platform. Musk had emphasized that there would be no limit on costs and that he would hold the boards of directors of these companies accountable.
The lawsuit from Carano comes at a time when Republican politicians like Ron DeSantis are taking a harder stance on issues such as gender politics and race. DeSantis has made "holding woke corporations accountable" a central theme of his failed presidential campaign. In a retaliatory move, he took control of the special tax district governing development around Disney World after the company expressed opposition to a law limiting discussions on sexuality and gender in classrooms.
As the legal battle unfolds, the outcome could have far-reaching implications for Hollywood, freedom of speech, and the relationship between corporations and individual expression.
