Toyota announced on Wednesday that it is recalling over 1.8 million RAV4 vehicles, specifically from model years 2013-2018. The recall comes as a result of a fire risk associated with some replacement batteries, according to a statement from the company.

The issue arises from the incorrect dimensions of certain replacement batteries used in the SUV. If the car makes a sharp turn, these improperly sized batteries might shake loose and potentially start a fire. Toyota has identified that the problem arises from the use of smaller top dimensions for some replacement 12-volt batteries, which may not fit correctly in the affected vehicles.

In a statement, Toyota explained, "If a small-top battery is used for replacement and the hold-down clamp is not tightened correctly, the battery could move when the vehicle is driven with forceful turns. The movement could cause the positive battery terminal to contact the hold-down clamp and short circuit." This poses a significant fire hazard and prompted the company to issue a recall.

Toyota has assured vehicle owners that they are actively working on a solution to rectify the situation. The remedy will involve replacing the battery hold-down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover at no cost to the owners. Affected vehicle owners will be notified about the recall in December.

To check if their RAV4 is affected, Toyota has directed owners to enter their vehicle information number or license plate information on the Toyota website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website specifically dedicated to recalls.

Ensuring the safety of their customers is a top priority for Toyota, and this recall serves as a proactive step to address the potential fire risk associated with certain replacement batteries. By offering a remedy free of charge, the company aims to swiftly resolve the issue and provide peace of mind to RAV4 owners.

With the recall process already underway, Toyota urges all owners of the affected vehicles to promptly check their eligibility for the recall and take the necessary steps to ensure their safety.
