In response to a recall notice from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla has implemented a software update to resolve a backup camera issue affecting certain Model S, X, and Y vehicles. The recall, identified as NHTSA recall number 24V-035 and manufacturer recall number SB-24-00-002, applies to 199,575 vehicles with the 2023 model year, running software versions 2023.44.30 to 2023.44.30.6.
The NHTSA highlighted in a recall letter that Model S, X, and Y vehicles equipped with the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer Hardware 4.0 (HW4) were experiencing a rearview image display problem while in reverse. Promptly addressing the issue, Tesla promptly released a software update to rectify the malfunction.
According to the recall notice, the NHTSA will be sending owner notification letters on March 22 to inform affected Tesla owners about the issue and the availability of the software update solution.
This recent recall comes amidst ongoing debates surrounding the use of the term "recall" for issues that can be resolved through over-the-air (OTA) software updates, as opposed to requiring physical servicing by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously criticized the use of the term, stating that it is "anachronistic and just flat wrong" when referring to a software update.
In the past, Tesla has swiftly addressed concerns by deploying software updates. Just last month, a recall was issued for 2 million Tesla vehicles due to Autopilot's Autosteer system lacking sufficient safety checks. Tesla responded by releasing software version 2023.44.30, which enhanced driver attentiveness monitoring measures and provided clearer warning labels.
Despite objections raised by various parties, the NHTSA continues to categorize such issues as recalls, even when they can be resolved through OTA software updates rather than physical servicing. It remains to be seen whether the NHTSA and the Department of Transportation will consider developing new terminology for these cases.
As of now, neither the NHTSA nor the Department of Transportation have responded to requests for comment on the matter. Tesla owners affected by the backup camera issue can anticipate receiving the necessary software update to rectify the problem in their vehicles.
