Google Home Mini users have encountered problems with their speakers failing to turn on following a recent firmware update, potentially rendering them unusable. While the issue appears to be widespread, not all Home Mini units are affected, prompting Google to investigate the matter.

The popular budget smart assistant speaker, known for its integration with Google Assistant, was launched in 2017 at a price point of $50. Despite its average sound quality, the device gained popularity, especially during major sales events when it was heavily discounted to as low as $20. Users who rely on their Home Minis are advised to prevent their speakers from installing the latest update to avoid potential bricking.

Over the past few weeks, numerous users have taken to Google forums and Reddit to report sudden power failures in their Home Minis, with even hard resets failing to resolve the issue. While the problem seems to stem from a new firmware update, it is worth noting that not all units are experiencing the problem. Some original Google Home owners have also reported similar concerns about their devices, albeit on a smaller scale. The issue does not seem to affect Google Nest speakers.

Google has acknowledged the problem to some extent, with a community manager stating that the company is actively investigating the matter. Users encountering difficulties are encouraged to share feedback reports with the option to send device usage data and crash reports to assist Google in diagnosing the problem.

Given that the Home Mini is now considered an older device, users have found contacting Google support for a replacement to be futile, as the device is no longer covered by the standard one-year warranty.

Affected users are left with little choice but to await a bug fix from Google, hoping that the company can issue an update to resolve the issue. In the meantime, those without speaker issues are advised to disconnect their Home Minis from the internet to prevent automatic updates that could potentially result in their device being bricked.

The firmware update causing the bricking issue is not the first incident of its kind for Google Home Minis. A similar situation occurred in September 2019, during which Google offered free replacements to affected customers. However, it remains to be seen what action Google will take this time, given that the Home Mini is no longer officially on sale.

For users seeking immediate alternatives, a list of recommended Google Assistant smart speakers is available. However, for those in need of a direct replacement for their Home Minis and willing to give Google another chance, the Nest Mini (2nd gen) is suggested.

As of now, Google has yet to respond to requests for comment, and further updates on the situation will be provided once available.
