Arizona State University Partners with OpenAI to Introduce AI-powered Chatbot for Faculty and Staff

Arizona State University (ASU) has announced a collaboration with OpenAI, bringing ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, to the university's researchers, staff, and faculty. This marks OpenAI's first higher education partnership.
ASU plans to kick off the collaboration in February by launching an open challenge, inviting faculty and staff members to submit ideas on how to leverage ChatGPT for student success, research advancement, and streamlining organizational processes.
Lev Gonick, ASU's chief information officer, stated in an email interview with TechCrunch, "As OpenAI begins to explore how to market or align a business for universities, they're looking for a design partner, a thought partner, and I think that's a significant measure of why we've come together today to make this announcement."
The collaboration between OpenAI and ASU reflects the evolving perspective on AI in education, where advancements in technology have outpaced the development of curriculums. Over the summer, several schools and colleges had initially banned the use of ChatGPT due to concerns over plagiarism and misinformation. However, ASU has embraced AI as a tool for educational advancement.
Gonick emphasized, "The open call to faculty, staff, and researchers ensures that we can provide ongoing and meaningful support that lays the foundations for our teams to harness the true potential of these technologies to augment human learning and creativity, not replace it."
Under the partnership, ASU will grant ChatGPT Enterprise accounts to its full-time employees. ChatGPT Enterprise, launched in August, offers enhanced features such as privacy and data analysis capabilities in addition to the standard ChatGPT functionalities.
The advanced version of ChatGPT also includes an admin console that allows organizations to manage the usage of the chatbot within their workforce. It provides customizable conversation templates to build internal workflows, and OpenAI's API platform's credits enable the creation of tailored ChatGPT-powered solutions.
ASU's ChatGPT Enterprise accounts will come with priority access to ChatGPT and unlimited usage of Advanced Data Analysis, a feature that allows users to analyze data, generate charts, solve math problems, and more.
Gonick stated that ASU will play a "dual role" in managing ChatGPT Enterprise accounts while actively engaging in efforts related to the AI's support and effective utilization.
In the initial phase, ASU's primary focus is to ensure its faculty, staff, and researchers have priority access to AI tools. Gonick expressed the university's commitment to be at the forefront of discovery and implementation, stating, "Right now, we're hyper-focused on putting ChatGPT Enterprise into the hands of our knowledge core."
The collaboration between OpenAI and ASU signifies a strategic step towards responsible and scalable integration of AI technologies in higher education, where AI resources are utilized effectively and ethically to enhance the academic community's capabilities.
