In preparation for the European Union's upcoming requirement to enable app sideloading, Apple is reportedly planning to split the App Store "in two" in the coming weeks. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this move will ensure compliance with the region's impending Digital Markets Act.

The EU's Digital Markets Act, aimed at increasing competition and leveling the playing field for app developers, will mandate that Apple allow users to download apps onto their iPhones outside of the official App Store. This means users will have the option to obtain apps from alternative sources, potentially resulting in a major shift in the app distribution landscape.

Apple has been making efforts to adapt its App Store policies to comply with the new regulations. The company's initiative to split the App Store is expected to address the EU requirement and enable seamless app sideloading. However, the specifics of how the split will be implemented and the user experience remain unclear.

This development follows Apple's recent announcement of the launch of iOS 17.3, set to be released next week. The software update is anticipated to be available on Monday, January 22 or Tuesday, January 23. Alongside iOS 17.3, Apple will also introduce the Unity Bloom iPhone and iPad wallpaper for the Lock Screen.

The Vision Pro headset, unveiled by Apple at WWDC 2023, has also garnered attention. The headset's virtual keyboard demo showcased a floating keyboard for inputting text in a spatial computing environment. However, according to Gurman, Apple's virtual keyboard has been heavily criticized, with reviewers claiming it to be a "complete write-off." This suggests that users may still need to rely on physical keyboards for some time.

As the tech giant embraces the new year, Apple enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the release of several notable features expected in 2024. Among them are Stolen Device Protection, collaborative Apple Music playlists, AirPlay on hotel room TVs, app sideloading in the EU, next-generation CarPlay, and roadside assistance via satellite outside of urban areas.

Additionally, reports suggest that OLED displays for the upcoming iPad Pro models have entered production, with device shipments scheduled to commence in April. It is believed that LG Display has started manufacturing the thin film transistor (TFT) for the new 13-inch iPad Pro displays, while Samsung is expected to follow suit this week.

With these developments in motion, Apple continues to address regulatory changes, improve its product lineup, and provide users with enhanced features and experiences. The split of the App Store marks a significant shift in Apple's app distribution model, as it prepares to embrace app sideloading requirements and adapt to evolving market dynamics in the EU.
