Thomas, who had been with the organization for four years, was scheduled to earn $6.5 million for the upcoming season, including a $500,000 roster bonus. However, the Commanders have opted to cut him loose, saving some money in the process.
Last season, Thomas proved to be a reliable target, recording 55 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns, which tied him for the team lead. This was his best season since joining the Washington organization in 2020. Originally drafted by the Cardinals, Thomas has had stints with the Bills and Lions before finding a consistent role with the Commanders.
Leno, who just completed his third season with Washington, will also be departing from the team. Both Thomas and Leno will turn 33 this year. The Commanders' decision to release Leno raises questions about their plans for the left tackle position and the offensive line as a whole.
With the departure of Thomas, the Commanders may now search for a new starting tight end in free agency or the upcoming NFL draft. The remaining tight ends on the roster include Cole Turner, John Bates, and Armani Rogers. Turner and Bates had modest receiving statistics in the 2023 season, with 120 and 151 receiving yards respectively. Rogers missed the entire season due to an Achilles injury.
The release of Thomas and Leno signals a significant shake-up within the Washington Commanders' roster. As the team looks ahead to the upcoming season, it remains to be seen how they will address the voids left by these departures and what adjustments will be made to strengthen the offense and offensive line.
