According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, sources have revealed that the San Francisco 49ers are interviewing Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach David Merritt for their defensive coordinator role. Merritt, a trusted assistant under Steve Spagnuolo, played a pivotal role in coaching the Chiefs' fourth-ranked pass defense this season. The 52-year-old has been with the Chiefs since the beginning of the 2019 season, where he mentored players like Charvarius Ward, Juan Thornhill, L'Jarius Sneed, Rashad Fenton, Trent McDuffie, Bryan Cook, Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, and Chamarri Conner.
Prior to his tenure in Kansas City, Merritt held coaching positions with the New York Jets, New York Giants, and Arizona Cardinals. A former NFL linebacker drafted in 1993, Merritt shared that he previously made a commitment to his wife to focus on family while his children were young before pursuing a coordinator role. Merritt mentioned having children aged 33, 27, 25, 17, and a sophomore and junior in high school. While expressing his dedication to being the best defensive coach for his players, he emphasized the importance of building lasting relationships with his team.
Despite the potential opportunity for a defensive coordinator position, Merritt highlighted the significance of years of service over financial gain, citing the value of close bonds with his players. If offered the role, he expressed the intention to consult with his wife before making a decision, emphasizing the importance of balancing professional ambitions with family commitments.
