In a move to strengthen their edge rushing capabilities, the Miami Dolphins have successfully acquired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pro Bowler Shaq Barrett. According to ESPN, Barrett has agreed to a one-year deal with the Dolphins worth up to $9 million.
Under their new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, who was hired from the Baltimore Ravens this offseason, the Dolphins were in dire need of assistance on the edge. The team faced setbacks last season with injuries to Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb, while Andrew Van Ginkel departed in free agency for the Minnesota Vikings.
Barrett, who was released by the Buccaneers due to salary cap constraints, brings a wealth of experience to the Dolphins. While the 31-year-old may not be in his physical prime, his ability to make an impact as a rotational rusher is still highly regarded.
During Barrett's standout season in 2019, he led the league in sacks with an impressive tally of 19.5. This performance earned him both a Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro honors. However, in the past two seasons, his sack numbers have dipped to 3 and 4.5 respectively, raising questions about his recent productivity.
Nonetheless, the Dolphins are hopeful that Barrett can rediscover his dominant form under the guidance of Weaver, who has previously shown an aptitude for maximizing the potential of veteran rushmen in Baltimore. The return of Phillips and Chubb from their injuries will provide additional support on the field, further enhancing the effectiveness of Miami's edge rush.
With the addition of Shaq Barrett, the Miami Dolphins have taken a crucial step in solidifying their edge defense. As the 2021 season approaches, fans eagerly await the impact that Barrett will bring to the team, hoping he can regain his previous form and once again be a force to be reckoned with on the field.
