The Kansas City Chiefs have signed punter Matt Araiza, as announced by his sports agency on Thursday. Araiza, who was a sixth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2022, faced allegations of involvement in a gang rape incident that led to his release from the Bills after the draft. However, Araiza and his former San Diego State teammates were cleared of any wrongdoing by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office in December 2022.
Following the resolution of the legal issues, Araiza expressed gratitude to the Chiefs organization for giving him the opportunity to continue his NFL career. The civil lawsuit against Araiza was dropped, and he also dismissed a defamation countersuit against the woman who alleged the rape.
Araiza, who last played in the NFL two years ago, expressed excitement about joining the Super Bowl Champions. The punter had an impressive college career at San Diego State, winning the 2021 Ray Guy Award for the nation's top punter and setting NCAA records for punt average, 60-yard punts, and 50-yard punts in a single season.
Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend, who is currently with the team, is set to become a free agent in March. Araiza's signing marks a fresh start for the talented punter and an opportunity to continue his professional career in the NFL.
