In an offseason filled with quarterback movement, Marcus Mariota has found a new home with the Washington Commanders. The former Eagles' backup has reportedly signed a deal worth $6 million, which is a slight increase from his previous $5 million contract with Philadelphia.
Mariota's arrival in Washington comes as the Commanders are expected to draft a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. This suggests that Mariota may serve as a temporary solution for the team until their rookie signal-caller is ready to take over the reins.
Meanwhile, the Eagles find themselves in an intriguing position. Last year, they drafted Jamie McKee, a promising sixth-round pick out of Stanford, who showed great potential during his rookie training camp. Despite not seeing any game action last season and being relegated to emergency quarterback duties, McKee has shown promise.
Having a capable and affordable backup quarterback for three seasons is an appealing prospect for the Eagles, considering the value they place on the backup QB spot. In recent years, the team has relied on veteran quarterbacks to fulfill this role. In 2021, it was Joe Flacco and Gardner Minshew, followed by Minshew alone in 2022, and finally Marcus Mariota in 2023.
However, the Eagles are not ruling out the possibility of acquiring a veteran backup quarterback. Free agency still offers options such as Easton Stick, who previously played under offensive coordinator Kellen Moore with the Chargers. Another available option is Baltimore's Tyler Huntley, known for his dual-threat abilities. Additionally, quarterbacks like Ryan Tannehill, Joshua Dobbs, and Jimmy Garoppolo remain on the market.
Trade talks have also surfaced as a potential avenue for the Eagles to explore. One intriguing option would be to pursue Justin Fields if the Bears decide to draft their next quarterback next month. Should Fields become available at a minimal cost, the Eagles may consider making a move to acquire the talented young signal-caller.
As the offseason progresses, the Eagles will continue to evaluate their backup quarterback situation. Whether they rely on the potential of Jamie McKee or opt for a veteran presence, their decision will greatly impact the team's depth at the quarterback position, ensuring they have a capable backup for the upcoming seasons.
