According to a report from ESPN's Dianna Russini, the Los Angeles Chargers are actively shopping some of their biggest names, including edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. While trade interests from various teams have been noted, many around the league are eagerly awaiting to see if the Chargers decide to release these talented players.

The San Francisco 49ers, who are in search of potential upgrades at the edge position to complement Nick Bosa, have emerged as a potential landing spot for either Mack or Bosa. The speculation has already begun, as both players have an impressive track record and could potentially reunite as teammates in the NFL.

Joey Bosa, who has been one of the top pass rushers in the league, has faced injury concerns in recent seasons, appearing in just 14 games over the past two years. However, even with limited playing time, he has managed to record an impressive 9.0 sacks. Bosa currently has two years remaining on his five-year, $135 million contract. If acquired in a trade without a restructure, his contract would create a $22 million cap hit in 2024 and a $23.36 million cap hit in 2025. The 49ers would have the flexibility to release Bosa after the 2024 season without any dead money.

On the other hand, Khalil Mack, who turns 33 in February, is coming off one of the best seasons of his career with the Chargers. He played in over 80% of the team's defensive snaps, accumulating 74 tackles and a career-high 17 sacks. Mack has just one year remaining on his current contract, and if acquired without a restructure, his contract would result in a $23.25 million cap hit in 2024.

The 49ers have long shown interest in Mack, reportedly making multiple first-round pick offers to acquire him when he was with the Oakland Raiders. However, the Raiders ultimately traded Mack to the Chicago Bears, who would later send him to the Chargers after four seasons.

The Chargers are currently facing a challenging salary cap situation this offseason, with both Mack and Bosa carrying substantial cap hits north of $35 million. As a result, teams are hopeful that the Chargers will release them, allowing them to become free agents.

While it remains uncertain whether the 49ers will pursue a trade or wait for Mack or Bosa to become free agents, there are several reasons why San Francisco would be an attractive destination for both players. The Bosa brothers' Ohio State connection and Mack's history in the Bay Area make the 49ers a desirable option. However, the 49ers may face competition from other NFL teams in acquiring an above-average impact edge rusher.

As the trade market heats up and the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds and whether the 49ers will make a move to bolster their defense with the addition of Khalil Mack or Joey Bosa.
