The deal includes a hefty $50 million signing bonus and $90 million guaranteed over the next two seasons, with an additional $10 million guaranteed in 2026, bringing the total guarantees to a whopping $100 million.
Cousins' move to Atlanta comes as a surprise, not only because he was a mainstay in Minnesota for the past six seasons but also due to the expectations that he would return to the Vikings. Following Cousins' season-ending Achilles injury, the Vikings had experienced firsthand the challenges of not having a franchise quarterback. However, instead of bringing him back, Minnesota allowed Cousins to explore other options, leading to his decision to join the Falcons.
Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah expressed appreciation for Cousins' leadership and contributions to the team and the community, but stated that they were unable to come to an agreement on a contract that aligned with their long-term vision. Adofo-Mensah emphasized that the Vikings have contingency plans in place for the quarterback position and will continue to build a championship-caliber roster.
Atlanta, after two seasons of uneven play under center, was expected to be active in the quarterback market this offseason. The Falcons, under their new coaching staff, were unlikely to give Desmond Ridder another chance, making Cousins an ideal fit. However, this scenario would only materialize if the Vikings allowed Cousins to become a free agent, which they ultimately did.
The possibility of Cousins leaving Minnesota became apparent during the NFL Scouting Combine when Adofo-Mensah was noncommittal about the quarterback's future with the team. Negotiations between the two parties did not progress sufficiently to prevent Cousins from considering other options. When Atlanta made an offer, Cousins seized the opportunity to join the Falcons.
Cousins' tenure in Minnesota concludes with an impressive resume, including two playoff appearances, three Pro Bowl selections, and a 50-37-1 regular-season record as a starter. He amassed 23,265 passing yards, threw 171 touchdowns against 55 interceptions, and maintained a solid 101.2 passer rating during his time with the Vikings. Despite facing criticism, Cousins consistently led the team to success amidst changes in the receiving corps and coaching staff.
Additionally, Cousins' move to Atlanta eliminates a potential trade partner for the Chicago Bears' anticipated efforts to trade quarterback Justin Fields. The Falcons, instead of pursuing Fields, opted for stability and reliable production by acquiring Cousins, who will join an offense featuring talented playmakers such as tight end Kyle Pitts, wide receiver Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson.
While the debate about Cousins' ability to bring a Super Bowl to his team may continue, for Atlanta, the focus is centered on securing reliable production after years of quarterback instability. With the signing of Cousins, the Falcons believe they have found the stability and leadership needed to bolster their offense and compete at a higher level.
