In an effort to strengthen their defense and special teams, the Green Bay Packers have decided to re-sign cornerback and kickoff returner Keisean Nixon. The three-year deal is reportedly worth $18 million, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Nixon, who will turn 27 in June, showcased his skills last season as he started in the slot for the Packers. His impressive performances earned him first-team All-Pro honors as a kickoff returner for the second consecutive season.
During the 2023 season, Nixon displayed his defensive prowess by recording 80 tackles, one interception, six passes defensed, and three tackles for loss in 17 games. Notably, his lone interception came in a crucial victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in December.
Although Nixon was heavily targeted in the slot, allowing 65 catches out of 84 targets for 626 yards, the Packers and their new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley see great potential in Nixon's ability to improve in this position. It is clear that the team values his contributions on defense.
In addition to his defensive capabilities, Nixon has proven himself as a valuable kickoff returner. Over the last two seasons, he has tallied 65 kickoffs for 1,791 yards and scored one touchdown. Remarkably, Nixon led the league in both kickoff returns and kickoff return yardage in 2022 and 2023. Furthermore, his 105-yard kickoff return for a touchdown remains the longest kickoff return in the NFL in 2022.
The re-signing of Nixon marks the second free agent to return to the Packers this offseason, joining tight end Tyler Davis. With Nixon's versatility and impact on both defense and special teams, the Packers are strengthening their roster for the upcoming season.
As the 2024 season approaches, fans and analysts look forward to witnessing Keisean Nixon's growth and contributions to the Green Bay Packers.
