In a surprising move, former first-round pick Justin Fields has been traded from the Chicago Bears to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The deal, confirmed by CBS Sports Senior NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, involves the Steelers sending a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Bears, which could potentially become a fourth-round pick based on playtime.
Fields' future in Chicago had been uncertain since rumors began swirling during the 2023 season about the Bears' long-term plans for him. Ultimately, the team decided to start fresh at the quarterback position, providing Fields with a new opportunity with the Steelers.
The Steelers had reportedly shown interest in Fields for quite some time, and now he will join forces with nine-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson, who was recently signed by Pittsburgh. ESPN reports that Wilson is set to be the Steelers' starter, while Fields will assume the backup role.
This trade essentially guarantees that the Bears will select former USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick. Williams will have a solid supporting cast around him, including wideouts Keenan Allen and DJ Moore, running back D'Andre Swift, and tight end Gerald Everett.
From a financial standpoint, the Steelers find themselves in an advantageous position with Fields. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has a cap hit of only $3.2 million. The team has until May 2 to decide whether to exercise his and running back Najee Harris' fifth-year options.
Additionally, the Steelers managed to sign Wilson for a mere $1.21 million, as the Denver Broncos are footing a substantial bill of $39 million to keep him off their roster in 2024. Despite acquiring Fields, Pittsburgh still has the flexibility to make further additions to their roster through free agency.
Fields had a mixed performance during his tenure as the Bears' starting quarterback, achieving a 10-28 record. Nonetheless, he displayed glimpses of his potential, which convinced Chicago to select him with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Throughout his time with the Bears, Fields improved his completion percentage and even set a new rushing record for quarterbacks during the 2022 season.
Last year, Fields had his best season yet, setting career highs in completion percentage, passing yards, and touchdown passes while minimizing interceptions. With a fresh start in Pittsburgh, Fields will have the opportunity to continue his development and contribute to the Steelers' quest for success.
As the NFL offseason progresses, fans eagerly await the next chapter in Justin Fields' career, while the Bears prepare to usher in a new era with their highly anticipated selection of Caleb Williams.
