In an effort to retain running back Aaron Jones, the Green Bay Packers have reportedly engaged in discussions with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about a potential contract restructuring. The talks took place during the Scouting Combine, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Jones, who has been the subject of cap casualty rumors since the conclusion of the Packers' season, is currently set to earn a base salary of $11.1 million, with a cap hit exceeding $17 million. The discussions between the team and Jones' agent are centered around finding a figure that satisfies both parties and surpasses what Jones believes he could earn in the open market.
If an agreement cannot be reached, the Packers are prepared to release Jones at the start of the league year. However, the team would only free up approximately $4.673 million in cap space without a post-June 1 designation. In the event of a post-June 1 designation, the Packers would clear a more substantial $11.3 million in cap space.
The negotiation process highlights the Packers' desire to retain the talented running back, who has been an integral part of their offensive success. Jones, known for his agility and playmaking ability, has established himself as a key contributor to the team's offensive prowess.
As the contract talks continue, both sides remain hopeful of finding common ground that allows Jones to remain a vital part of the Packers' roster. The outcome of these discussions will significantly impact the team's salary cap and ultimately shape the makeup of their roster for the upcoming season.
