Lock, who is 27 years old, brings both experience and potential to the table.
Lock's signing comes as the Giants bid farewell to Tyrod Taylor, who agreed to terms with the Jets on Monday night. Lock has inked a one-year contract with the Giants worth $5 million, which is fully guaranteed.
The Giants had the option to bring Taylor back for another season, but it seemed apparent that their football relationship had run its course. Additionally, Taylor's two-year deal with the Jets, worth up to $18 million, proved to be too expensive for the Giants.
Lock, a former second-round pick out of Missouri in 2019, boasts a career record of 9-14 in 23 starts. After starting 21 games in his first three years with the Broncos, Lock only made one start in the past two seasons with the Seahawks.
Lock will join a quarterback room that includes Daniel Jones, who is recovering from reconstructive knee surgery, and Tommy DeVito, an undrafted rookie who impressed during the 2023 season, winning three consecutive games for the Giants.
But what does Lock's addition mean for the Giants' plans in the upcoming NFL draft? Not much, it seems. Despite owning the No. 6 overall pick, the Giants traded away their second-round pick (No. 39 overall) to acquire edge rusher Brian Burns from the Panthers. However, they still hold the No. 47 overall pick in the second round.
Lock's presence on the roster for the 2024 season will not sway the Giants' decision on drafting a high-profile quarterback next month. General manager Joe Schoen has emphasized that if Jones is healthy, he is expected to be the starter in Week 1.
With Lock now in the mix, DeVito will be hoping that the Giants opt to keep three quarterbacks and choose not to select another signal-caller in the draft. Lock's youth and experience make him a valuable backup, capable of stepping onto the field and competing at a high level.
Lock has showcased his abilities in crucial moments on the field. Last season for the Seahawks, he led a 92-yard drive in Week 15 against the Eagles, culminating in a game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. In Week 4, Lock directed a 75-yard touchdown drive against the Giants after Geno Smith's injury.
Throughout his five-year career, Lock has completed 59.7 percent of his passes, throwing for 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. His career passer rating stands at 79.5.
The Giants wasted no time in finding a backup quarterback during the early days of free agency. As quarterbacks quickly found new homes, the Giants prioritized securing their backup position. Alongside Lock's signing, the Giants also saw defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson, a starter in 13 of 17 games last season, depart for the Panthers on a three-year, $22.5 million deal.
Lock's presence provides stability and depth to the Giants' quarterback position. As the team moves forward, the focus remains on Jones' recovery and his expected return as the starter in the upcoming season.
