FedEx has decided to cut ties with the Washington Commanders as the naming rights holder for the stadium in Landover, Maryland, where the team plays. The agreement, which has been in place since 1999, was supposed to last until 2026, but FedEx is ending it prematurely. The Commanders are already in search of a new partner to take over the naming rights before the 2024 season.
This announcement adds to a series of changes within the Commanders organization in recent years, including a rebranding, new ownership, and the appointment of a new head coach and general manager. The team expressed gratitude for FedEx's longstanding partnership and contribution to the community.
Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing in the U.S. House regarding a bill that could grant the District of Columbia control over the old RFK Stadium site, where the Commanders have historically played. Mayor Muriel Bowser sees the 99-year lease as an opportunity to revitalize the area and potentially entice the Commanders back to Washington D.C.
Despite the potential move, the Commanders have revealed plans to invest $75 million in enhancing the fan experience at their current stadium in Prince George's County. Team president Jason Wright emphasized the importance of this decision, as detailed in a recent press release. Keep up with NBC Washington for further updates on these developments.
