The Philadelphia Eagles have made a significant move to solidify their backup quarterback position, acquiring Kenny Pickett from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Eagles, known for prioritizing the role of their No. 2 quarterback, made the surprising trade despite their reported interest in Justin Fields.

Over the years, the Eagles have seen the importance of having a reliable backup quarterback. From Koy Detmer and A.J. Feeley to Jeff Garcia and Nick Foles, these quarterbacks have stepped in when needed and kept the team's season alive. Therefore, it wasn't shocking to see the Eagles acquire Pickett, even though Fields was also an option.

One of the factors that influenced the Eagles' decision was the cost and team control. Pickett's acquisition ensures two seasons of his services compared to just one season with Fields. This factor, combined with Jalen Hurts' five-year extension and cap number, made Pickett a more financially viable option for the Eagles.

In terms of compensation, the Eagles traded a 2024 third-round pick (No. 98 overall) and a pair of 2025 seventh-round picks for Pickett. They also received a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 120 overall) in return. On the other hand, the Steelers only had to give up a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Bears for Fields, with the potential to convert it into a fourth-round selection.

Moreover, the Eagles have historically preferred to have a backup quarterback under team control for multiple seasons. In the case of Pickett, his current contract offers a more cost-effective option compared to what Fields' contract would entail. This factor played a role in the decision-making process for the team.

It's worth noting that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman had been keeping an eye on Pickett for quite some time. As early as last season, Roseman had been evaluating Pickett's performance, scouting him during his senior season and at the Senior Bowl. This familiarity with Pickett's skill set made him an attractive choice for the Eagles.

While the decision to acquire Pickett may have surprised some, the Eagles had to consider the career opportunities for Fields as well. In Philadelphia, Fields would have been relegated to the No. 2 spot behind Hurts, with limited chances to compete or start. However, in Pittsburgh, Fields has a real opportunity to compete with Russell Wilson for the starting quarterback role and potentially secure a long-term future with the Steelers.

Ultimately, the Eagles made a calculated decision to acquire Kenny Pickett as their No. 2 quarterback. With his contract, team control, and the vision of their general manager, the team is confident in his ability to fit into their system and provide quality support for Jalen Hurts. This move not only strengthens their quarterback depth but also gives Pickett a fresh start and a team that highly values his abilities.
