Dynamic kickoff returner Cordarrelle Patterson has found a new home in Pittsburgh, signing a two-year contract worth $6 million. The deal was confirmed by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero on Tuesday.
Patterson's decision to join the Steelers came as no surprise, as he follows his former coach in Atlanta, Arthur Smith, who is now the offensive coordinator for Pittsburgh. With his exceptional return skills, Patterson is expected to play a crucial role on special teams, but he may also contribute as a runner and pass-catcher, similar to his time with the Falcons.
The adoption of a modified kickoff format by the NFL was another influential factor in Patterson's decision. The new format was approved by league ownership during the Annual League Meeting, with NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reporting that Patterson's agent was anxiously awaiting the confirmation. Once the change was given the green light, Patterson wasted no time in committing to the Steelers.
A record-setting player, Patterson currently holds the NFL record for the most career kickoff return touchdowns with nine. During his three years in Atlanta, he showcased his versatility on offense, accumulating 1,494 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Additionally, he recorded 82 catches for 708 yards and six receiving touchdowns.
Now 33 years old, Patterson's acquisition by the Steelers raises questions about how he will be utilized. Given his history with Coach Smith, it is highly likely that Patterson will be utilized in multiple roles, making him a valuable asset to the team. Fans can certainly expect to witness his exceptional return skills under the new kickoff format.
With Cordarrelle Patterson's arrival, the Pittsburgh Steelers have not only secured a dynamic returner but also a player who can make significant contributions on offense. As the 2021 season approaches, all eyes will be on Patterson as he aims to make a strong impact in his new role with the Steelers.
