After an impressive career, which saw him make the Pro Bowl for five consecutive seasons and earn First-Team All-Pro honors in the last two, Jones will now stay with the Chiefs for the foreseeable future.
According to reports, Jones has agreed to a five-year extension that includes a staggering $95 million guaranteed, making it the highest-ever salary for a defensive tackle. This significant sum surpasses the previous record held by Aaron Donald, who received $31.6 million. This announcement comes as a major victory for Jones and his agents.
The negotiations between Jones and the Chiefs spanned over a year, but the talented defensive tackle did not have to compromise on his worth to remain with the team. Jones had held out through the first game of last season, only signing an enhanced one-year contract that made it possible for the Chiefs to franchise tag him in the offseason.
Despite the risk of Jones testing the open market, the Chiefs opted to franchise-tag cornerback L'Jarius Sneed instead, potentially leaving Jones with additional leverage. Thankfully for the Chiefs and their fans, a deal was reached just 36 hours before the start of free-agent tampering.
During the Chiefs' Super Bowl 58 victory parade, Jones had expressed his desire to stay with the team, and it seems his wish has now been granted. The dynamic defensive tackle will continue to strive for greatness in Kansas City as he competes for more Super Bowl titles.
It is worth noting that in a surprising development, the younger and less-accomplished Justin Madubuike signed a four-year, $98 million extension ($75.5 million guaranteed) with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday. However, Jones managed to surpass that benchmark with his own remarkable contract, with all the guaranteed money reportedly due within the first three years of the deal.
Despite being ranked second on The Post's list of top 30 free agents available, Jones has proven his incredible value on the field. Among defensive players, only Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers ($119.9 million), Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers ($102 million), and Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns ($102 million) have more guaranteed money in their contracts than Jones.
Following the announcement, Jones took to social media to celebrate, expressing his excitement for "five more years of greatness" with the Chiefs. It is undoubtedly a joyous moment for both Jones and Chiefs fans, who can now look forward to seeing him dominate on the field for years to come.
