As the 2024 NFL draft approaches, the Chicago Bears are preparing to address their roster needs and fill several starting positions. With just four selections available, Bears' general manager Ryan Poles must make strategic decisions to ensure the team's contention for the playoffs. This year's draft class is not as deep as in previous years, making the early-round picks even more crucial for the Bears' success.
Heading into the draft, the Bears have a solid foundation on both sides of the ball. The defense aims to continue its dominance from the latter half of the 2023 season, with the only major concern lying in the defensive line, where a pair of starting jobs are up for grabs. Meanwhile, the offense has bolstered its firepower with the addition of several playmakers during the offseason. The arrival of their anticipated No. 1 pick rookie quarterback, Caleb Williams, adds to the excitement, as he steps into what is considered one of the best situations for a first-round quarterback in history.
Taking a closer look at each position, the Bears currently have Tyson Bagent as their starting quarterback after the trade of Justin Fields to the Steelers. However, the stage is set for incoming rookie Caleb Williams to take the reins as the first overall pick. At running back, the Bears found their new starter in D'Andre Swift through free agency, joining a backfield that includes Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson.
The wide receiver position boasts a dynamic duo in DJ Moore and newcomer Keenan Allen, acquired via a trade with the Chargers. While these two are undeniably the top options, the Bears could look to add another playmaker such as Rome Odunze with the ninth overall pick to solidify the WR3 role.
Chicago's tight end position is secure with Cole Kmet, who signed a long-term extension before the start of the 2023 season. Gerald Everett provides depth and complements Kmet effectively.
The starting offensive line is nearly set, with Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, Nate Davis, and Darnell Wright holding their respective positions. Competition for the starting center position intensifies with the addition of Ryan Bates and Coleman Shelton. Left tackle remains the wild card, with the possibility of the Bears selecting a top tackle in the draft, potentially challenging Braxton Jones.
On the defensive side, Montez Sweat shines as a standout pass rusher, but questions surround the edge rusher position opposite Sweat. Currently, DeMarcus Walker is slotted in as the starter, but the Bears may target a top edge rusher in the draft. A one-year deal for Yannick Ngakoue remains an option if a suitable edge rusher isn't found.
With nose tackle Andrew Billings locked in for the next two years, the Bears need to fill the three-technique position following Justin Jones' departure in free agency. Gervon Dexter emerges as a likely option to assume the starting role if the Bears don't find a suitable starter in the draft.
The linebacker tandem of Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards brings stability and continuity to the defense, with Jack Sanborn and Noah Sewell adding depth and competition.
In the secondary, star cornerback Jaylon Johnson signed a long-term extension, securing a vital piece of the rising defense. Tyrique Stevenson and Kyler Gordon also excelled in their roles last season, with solid depth provided by Terell Smith.
The safety position saw significant changes with the departure of Eddie Jackson. However, the Bears addressed the issue by signing Kevin Byard and Jonathan Owens during free agency. Byard will pair with Jaquan Brisker, giving the Bears a solid safety duo in an already-talented secondary.
In terms of special teams, the Bears appear content with their specialists - Cairo Santos, Trenton Gill, and Patrick Scales - who have formed a cohesive unit over the past two seasons.
With the 2024 NFL draft right around the corner, the Chicago Bears have their sights set on filling starting jobs and solidifying their roster for a playoff run. General manager Ryan Poles and the front office will make calculated moves to ensure the team's success for the upcoming season.
