Bears Acquire Offensive Lineman Ryan Bates in Trade with Bills

In an effort to bolster their offensive line, the Chicago Bears have traded a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft to the Buffalo Bills for offensive lineman Ryan Bates. The trade was announced by both teams, but it will not be official until March 13, which marks the start of the new league year. The deal is also contingent upon Bates passing a physical examination.

This isn't the first time the Bears have shown interest in Bates. In 2022, the Bears attempted to acquire him as a restricted free agent in free agency. However, the Bills matched the Bears' offer sheet and retained Bates on their roster.

Bates had a solid performance in the 2022 season, giving up only 28 pressures and one sack in 615 pass-blocking snaps. He primarily played as a right guard, accumulating a total of 810 snaps in that position. Additionally, Bates spent some time at center, with 135 snaps at that position. In the 2023 season, Bates saw limited playing time, with only 35 snaps, all at center.

The offensive lineman has two years remaining on his current contract, which will result in a $5.4 million cap hit annually for the Bears over the next two seasons, according to Spotrac.

However, this trade leaves the Bears with no Day 3 picks in this year's draft. As of now, they do not have selections in either the fifth, sixth, or seventh rounds.

The addition of Ryan Bates will provide the Bears with more depth and versatility on their offensive line. With his experience at both guard and center positions, Bates will offer flexibility and adaptability to the Bears' offensive scheme. The team will hope that Bates can contribute positively to their offense and help protect their quarterback in the upcoming seasons.

The Bears' trade for Ryan Bates showcases their dedication to improving their offensive line and their strategic approach to the offseason. With their sights set on success, the Bears are making moves to strengthen their roster and compete at the highest level in the NFL.
