In a long-awaited move, the Baltimore Ravens have successfully secured running back Derrick Henry, reaching a two-year agreement, according to ESPN and NFL Media reports. After a previous attempt to acquire him through a trade, the Ravens have finally landed the former Tennessee Titans star.
The deal, confirmed by CBS Sports HQ senior NFL insider Josina Anderson, is worth $16 million. However, with incentives, Henry has the opportunity to earn up to $20 million over the course of the two-year contract. Notably, $9 million is fully guaranteed in 2024, solidifying Henry's status as one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL.
Henry expressed his excitement about joining the Ravens on X (formerly Twitter), saluting "Flock Nation" after agreeing to terms. This move comes after Ravens player Marlon Humphrey revealed during the 2023 season that the team had come close to acquiring Henry at the trade deadline. Now, this much-anticipated team-up has become a reality.
Henry's arrival in Baltimore coincides with former Ravens veteran Gus Edwards signing a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. Meanwhile, the future of former starter J.K. Dobbins remains uncertain as he remains a free agent.
Despite being 30 years old and carrying a significant workload throughout his career, with over 2,000 carries under his belt, Henry has remained one of the most reliable ball-carriers in recent years. He has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in five of his last six seasons and has never averaged fewer than 4.2 yards per carry. Furthermore, he led the NFL in yards after contact in 2023, as reported by Pro Football Focus.
Henry will now join forces with dynamic dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jackson to become a prominent duo in the Ravens' offense. With his new contract averaging $8 million per year, Henry will rank seventh among the highest-earning running backs annually, alongside fellow 2024 free agents D'Andre Swift and Tony Pollard, who have recently joined new teams.
The addition of Derrick Henry to the Baltimore Ravens' roster certainly brings excitement and high expectations for the team's upcoming season, as they aim to maximize their offensive potential and make a deep playoff run.
