In their search for a new defensive coordinator, the San Francisco 49ers have expanded their list of potential candidates. According to a report from Matt Barrows of TheAthletic.com, the 49ers recently met with Raiders safeties coach Gerald Alexander.

Alexander, who joined the Raiders earlier this year, brings a wealth of experience to the table. Prior to his time with the Raiders, he served as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers for a couple of seasons. His impressive resume also includes playing stints with the Lions, Jaguars, Panthers, Dolphins, and Jets in the NFL.

The 49ers have been diligently conducting interviews for the opening, and Alexander now joins a list that already includes Nick Sorensen, the team's defensive pass game coordinator, Daniel Bullocks, the 49ers' current defensive backs coach, Dave Merritt, the Kansas City Chiefs' defensive backs coach, and former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley.

What makes Alexander's candidacy intriguing is his prior connection with Bullocks. The two were teammates in the Lions' defensive backfield during their playing days. This familiarity could potentially lead to a seamless transition and effective collaboration between the two coaches.

Alexander's coaching career began after hanging up his cleats, with various stops at several colleges. Prior to his time with the Raiders, he spent two seasons as the Miami Dolphins' defensive backs coach.

The 49ers are undoubtedly taking their time in assessing the numerous candidates for the important role of defensive coordinator. With each interview conducted, the team gets closer to finding the right individual who can help improve their defensive performance.

It remains to be seen who the 49ers will ultimately choose for the position, but the addition of Gerald Alexander to their list of potential candidates certainly signals their commitment to finding the best fit.
