In a concerning development surrounding the case of the missing Virginia mother, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, her husband was taken into custody outside their home on Thursday morning. Video footage captured the husband being led away in handcuffs, while an infant wrapped in a yellow blanket was also seen being carried out, although it remains uncertain if the child is their young daughter. The incident unfolded following a search warrant executed by the Manassas Park Police at the couple's residence on Wednesday.
Naresh Bhatt, Kafle Bhatt's husband, had last seen his wife over three weeks ago at the dinner table, as per his statement to the police. Since then, he claimed to have had no contact with her and eventually stopped cooperating with investigators. Kafle Bhatt was last spotted on July 27 at the UVA Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, according to authorities. She had subsequent contact with a friend on July 31, and on August 2, during a welfare check at their home, her husband provided additional information but did not report her missing until three days later.
The initial tip for the welfare check came from Kafle Bhatt's work colleagues, who expressed concern about her well-being. Detectives diligently pursued leads from August 5-8, revealing a significant lack of recent communication between Kafle Bhatt and her family, friends, employer, and on social media. Consequently, her status was elevated to that of an involuntary/critical missing person. The Manassas Park Police Chief, Mario Lugo, addressed the public's concerns, assuring them that the investigation remains a top priority for the department during a news conference on Wednesday.
Over the course of the investigation, the authorities executed a total of 10 search warrants and conducted numerous interviews related to the case. When asked about any potential person of interest, Chief Lugo stated that Kafle Bhatt's husband has been a point of interest for investigators, noting his lack of cooperation with the police. This contrasts with the initial statement released on August 15, where it was mentioned that the husband, along with friends and co-workers, had been cooperative.
As the search warrant at the Bhatt residence continued on Wednesday, Chief Lugo estimated that it would take approximately three to four hours to complete. Naresh Bhatt, in an interview with local news station WUSA, expressed his worries about his wife's whereabouts, stating that although she had disappeared before, this was the longest time she had been gone. Madan Uprety, president of the Nepali American Community Center in Manassas, has been in constant communication with the police for updates on the investigation.
Community support has also been mobilized, with a Facebook group created to raise awareness and coordinate search efforts for Kafle Bhatt. Daily updates on flyer distribution, search and rescue operations, as well as photos of the missing mother, have been shared on the page. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to provide financial support for the ongoing search efforts.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about Mamta Kafle Bhatt's whereabouts to contact the Manassas Park Police or provide anonymous tips through Manassas Park Crime Solvers. The investigation remains ongoing, and the police continue their tireless efforts to locate the missing mother.
