In a recent poll conducted by ABC News/Ipsos, Vice President Kamala Harris' approval rating has seen a significant jump compared to a week ago after President Biden withdrew from the race. The survey revealed that Harris' favorability rating now stands at 43% favorable to 42% unfavorable, a notable improvement from last Sunday's poll which had her at 35% favorable to 46% unfavorable.

What seems to be driving this more favorable outlook is the shift among independent voters, who now favor Harris by 44% to 40%. In the previous week's poll, these voters had a less favorable opinion of her, with only 28% viewing her favorably compared to 47% unfavorably.

While polling data suggests a narrowing race between the presumptive Democratic nominee and former President Donald Trump, it is still early in the campaign. Trump's favorability rating has also taken a dip, now standing at 36% favorable to 52% unfavorable, compared to 40% favorable to 51% unfavorable in last week's poll. Biden's favorability rating has improved slightly, with 37% viewing him favorably and 50% unfavorably, compared to 32% favorable to 55% unfavorable previously.

Harris' campaign has been celebrating a surge in momentum since she became the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. Her team boasts an impressive $200 million in fundraising in less than a week following her ascension. Early polling indicates that she still trails Trump, but the race is becoming increasingly competitive. Trump currently holds a 1.8 percentage point lead over Harris in the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate of polling for a national five-way contest.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll also measured favorability ratings for potential running mates. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear received a 13% favorable rating and 9% unfavorable, with 77% having no opinion or expressing uncertainty. Other potential candidates such as California Governor Gavin Newsom (21%, 33%, 45%), Josh Shapiro (17%, 13%, 68%), Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (20%, 21%, 57%), North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (7%, 8%, 84%), Arizona Senator Mark Kelly (22%, 12%, 65%), and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (6%, 7%, 86%) were also included in the survey.

As the timeline until the Democrats' planned virtual roll call to officially crown Harris as the presidential nominee draws near, she is expected to announce her running mate within the next two weeks. Meanwhile, Trump's running mate, JD Vance, had a 24% favorable rating and 39% unfavorable, with 36% indicating no opinion or stating that they were not familiar enough with him.

The ABC News/Ipsos survey was conducted nationally and sampled 1,200 adults between July 26-27. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points in the full sample.
