Vice President Kamala Harris is set to visit the battleground state of Wisconsin today, a day after securing the support of a majority of Democratic delegates needed to win her party's nomination against former President Donald Trump. This comes just two days after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, throwing his support behind Harris.
Harris, who officially launched her campaign with Biden's endorsement on Sunday, has seen an outpouring of support in the past few days. She has managed to raise over $100 million since then and has gained the backing of Democratic officials and political groups, solidifying her position as the party's chosen candidate.
Although Tuesday's visit to Milwaukee was scheduled prior to Biden's withdrawal, it now holds even greater significance as Harris gears up to take on Trump and portray herself as a calm and confident leader, following weeks of uncertainty within the Democratic Party about Biden's political future.
The timing of the visit is also significant as it comes just a week after the conclusion of the Republican National Convention held in the same city. With just over 100 days until Election Day, Harris aims to sharpen her message against the GOP nominee and court crucial swing voters in Wisconsin, which is part of the Democrats' critical "blue wall".
On Monday, Harris provided a glimpse into her campaign themes during a visit to her campaign headquarters in Delaware. She highlighted her experience as a prosecutor, contrasting it with Trump's criminal record. Additionally, she presented herself as a defender of economic opportunity and women's reproductive rights.
In response to the AP delegate count, Harris issued a statement emphasizing the importance of this election and the choice it presents to the American people. She expressed gratitude to President Biden and the Democratic Party for their support and pledged to take their case directly to the voters.
The AP delegate tally indicates that Harris has already garnered the support of well over the 1,976 delegates required to win the nomination on a first ballot. No other candidate was mentioned by the delegates contacted by AP. However, it is important to note that the AP has refrained from declaring Harris as the presumptive nominee as convention delegates can still cast their votes for the candidate of their choice at the August convention or virtual roll call.
Joining Harris on the visit to Wisconsin are prominent elected officials including Governor Tony Evers, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, Attorney General Josh Kaul, Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler, and state labor leaders.
As Harris continues to build momentum and gather support, all eyes will be on her as she takes on the monumental task of challenging former President Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 election.
