In a recent poll conducted by the University of Texas/Texas Politics Project, Vice President Kamala Harris has shown promising progress among Texas voters. While former President Donald Trump maintains a lead in the state with 49 percent, Harris closely trails with 44 percent, indicating a significant shift in favorability for the Democratic candidate.

The pollsters analyzed trends in Texas between June and late August, revealing a surge in enthusiasm among registered Democrats and a rise in Harris' favorability ratings. Notably, 70 percent of Harris supporters expressed a desire for her to win the November election, while the remaining 30 percent simply advocated against a Trump victory.

Although Harris has consistently trailed the Republican candidate over the past month, the margin has remained narrow. A major shift in the poll data occurred during the two-month period, marked by President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race and Harris' subsequent endorsement and nomination.

Opinions on Harris among Texans appeared divided, with 45 percent in favor and 46 percent against her. However, the percentage of Democratic voters who viewed her "very favorably" doubled during the same period. Trump maintained a reasonably favorable rating, with 49 percent approval in August compared to 45 percent in June. Notably, 57 percent of independent voters had a negative view of the former president.

The pollsters, James Henson and Joshua Blank, acknowledged the need for caution when interpreting changes in group support using polling data at this stage of the campaign. They emphasized the small sample size of many polls, leading to larger margins of error. Nonetheless, Harris' improved ratings have helped sustain the Democratic base in Texas.

The poll also explored other factors influencing the election, such as opinions on the suitability of Trump's age for the presidency, with 46 percent feeling that he was too old. Both candidates received equal scores of 52 percent for competency, while Harris slightly surpassed Trump in terms of having "the temperament to serve effectively as president," earning 49 percent compared to Trump's 47 percent.

On policy matters, Trump garnered higher ratings from Texans for key areas like the economy, immigration, and infrastructure. However, Harris received more favorable views concerning gun violence, healthcare, and climate change. The starkest contrast between the candidates emerged regarding abortion access, where Harris enjoyed a trust rating of 55 percent compared to Trump's 27 percent.

In terms of voter groups, Harris gained an advantage over Trump among Black and Latino voters, while the former president maintained a 23 percent lead over his rival among White voters. This Texas poll aligns with other recent surveys showcasing a closely contested race, highlighting the narrow gap between the candidates in several crucial states.

As the November election draws nearer, both candidates will likely intensify their campaign efforts in Texas and other key battlegrounds, hoping to sway undecided voters and solidify support in their respective bases.
