This announcement comes after a thorough external review and a failure to comply with policies implementing Title IX, which mandates the timely reporting of sexual misconduct and prohibits employees from conducting their own investigations.
According to a news release issued by the university, Blake Anderson failed to adhere to university policies regarding the reporting of sexual misconduct, including domestic violence. The release also stated that Anderson violated university police during the spring of 2023. As per his contractual obligations, Anderson will have a 14-day window to respond to the school's intention of termination.
In addition to Anderson's dismissal, Deputy Athletic Director Jerry Bovee, who was the interim athletics director at the time of the alleged violations, and Austin Albrecht, the football program's director of player development and community, were also fired. Both individuals were found to have violated university policies related to the reporting of sexual and domestic violence, as well as failures in their professional responsibilities.
Utah State University President Elizabeth Cantwell and Athletics Director Diana Sabua expressed their commitment to upholding the institution's values and holding individuals accountable for their conduct. They stated that the decision to terminate Anderson and others involved was based on a comprehensive external investigation, with the evidence compelling immediate action. The university's top priority remains delivering a respectful, transparent, and successful culture for the students and the community.
As the news of Anderson's termination spread, the university met with the football team to inform them about the changes. Defensive coordinator Nate Dreilling will now assume the role of interim head coach for the 2024 season.
Anderson's tenure at Utah State began on a high note, with a conference championship win during his first year. However, the following two seasons resulted in losing records, with a 6-7 performance in 2023, culminating in a loss at the Idaho Potato Bowl.
While these decisions undoubtedly have an impact on the student-athletes and the football program, the university remains dedicated to taking the necessary steps toward fostering a respectful and successful environment. The firing of Blake Anderson and the other staff members involved emphasizes Utah State University's commitment to accountability and ensuring the well-being of its students and community.
As the football program enters a new chapter under interim head coach Nate Dreilling, the university will continue to work towards a winning culture and the promotion of its core values.
