Several US military bases located throughout Europe have been placed on a heightened state of alert, with force protection levels raised to their second-highest state, due to concerns of a potential terrorist attack targeting US military personnel or facilities. This development comes as European authorities have issued warnings regarding a heightened terror threat on the continent, particularly in light of the upcoming Paris Olympics and the ongoing European football championships in Germany.

Among the bases that raised their alert level to Force Protection Condition "Charlie" on Sunday is the US Army garrison in Stuttgart, Germany, where the US European Command is headquartered. According to the US Army, this status is implemented when there is a specific incident or intelligence suggesting an imminent terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities.

US officials stationed in Europe have reported that this threat level has not been seen for at least a decade, indicating that there may be an active and reliable threat prompting such measures. However, the specific intelligence behind the heightened security remains undisclosed.

While a spokesperson for US European Command, Cdr. Dan Day, declined to comment on the specific force protection levels, he acknowledged that the safety and well-being of US military personnel remain paramount. Day emphasized that the command is constantly evaluating multiple factors that contribute to the security of the US military community abroad, and additional steps are taken as necessary to ensure their safety.

The German government, in preparation for the ongoing European football championships, has reinforced security measures by deploying 580 international police officers alongside German officers. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser highlighted the need to be prepared for various potential threats, ranging from Islamist terror to violence from criminals and hooligans.

France, which will soon host the Paris Olympics, has also taken significant precautions against possible terrorist attacks. Since March, the country has raised its national security alert system to the highest level. The US embassy in France has advised that French authorities actively monitor terrorist threats from organized groups and radicalized individuals, cautioning that attacks may occur without warning, targeting tourist locations, major sporting and cultural events, and other public areas.

As the security environment remains dynamic, US military personnel in the European theater are being urged to stay vigilant and alert at all times. The US European Command continues to monitor the situation, ensuring that its personnel are well-informed and prepared to guarantee the safety of themselves, their families, and loved ones.

It is crucial to note that sensitive operational security measures are being employed, which prevent specific details and measures from being disclosed to the public. As the European authorities and the US military navigate this challenging security landscape, maintaining a state of utmost readiness and preparedness remains of utmost importance.
