In a powerful video address on Ukraine's 33rd independence day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conveyed a strong message to Russia, stating that the war has "returned to its home." Filmed near the border area where Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into Kursk, Zelenskyy vowed that Russia would face retribution for its aggression.

Zelenskyy posted the video from a deserted, forested area in the Sumy region, only a few kilometers away from where Ukrainian forces crossed into Russia on August 6. Emphasizing Ukraine's resilience, Zelenskyy declared that his country would not be destroyed as Russia had intended. He warned that anyone who sought to sow evil on Ukrainian soil would face the consequences on their own territory.

The recent offensive in Kursk marks the most significant cross-border attack since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Ukrainian forces have reportedly made significant gains, occupying numerous villages encompassing over 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) and capturing Russian servicemen.

Zelenskyy did not mince words when addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing him as a "sick old man from Red Square who constantly threatens everyone with the red button." This reference to Red Square, where Russia holds its annual military parade, underscores the gravity of the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

While the incursion into Kursk has rattled Moscow, it has not halted Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine. In Kyiv, celebrations for Ukraine's independence were more subdued this year, with large crowds discouraged due to concerns of potential Russian attacks. However, the heightened air defenses in the capital have ensured relative tranquility thus far.

On a positive note, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed support for Ukraine's aspiration to join the European Union. In a video message, she commended Ukraine's progress towards EU membership and pledged continued solidarity. Von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine's freedom and security are interconnected with that of Europe.

Ukraine became an official candidate for EU membership in June 2022, just four months after Russia's invasion. The first round of formal accession negotiations took place in June of this year, reflecting the ongoing drive towards closer ties between Ukraine and the European Union.

As Ukraine commemorates its independence and battles against Russian aggression, Zelenskyy's resolute words serve as a reminder of the determination and resilience of the Ukrainian people. With ongoing conflicts and negotiations, the path towards peace and stability in the region remains uncertain.
