In a recent interview on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's pledge to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Zelenskyy emphasized that he considers Trump's comments to be campaign promises rather than specific actions or concerns for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy stated, "Election messages are election messages. Sometimes they are not very real." This statement came in response to concerns from supporters of Ukraine who worry that Trump's desire to swiftly end the war might come at the expense of Ukrainian interests, accommodating Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, Zelenskyy assured that he had talked to Trump and found him to be "very supportive." He revealed, "I had a phone call with Donald Trump, and he said that he's very supportive and we had a good conversation." The Ukrainian president indicated that Trump's stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict was not a cause for immediate concern.
During the debate with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, Trump refrained from explicitly expressing his support for Ukraine's position in the two-year-old war. Instead, he emphasized the need to negotiate a deal to halt the ongoing fighting. When moderator David Muir pushed for Trump's stance on Ukraine's victory, the president reiterated his call for a negotiated resolution.
Addressing the current American president, Zelenskyy stated that the world is eagerly awaiting President Joe Biden's response regarding the use of U.S. long-range missiles to strike deep within Russian territory. Russian President Putin has warned that such a move would be perceived as an act of war by NATO countries.
Zelenskyy expressed his expectation that if the Biden administration grants permission for such actions, other nations will follow suit. "Everybody is looking for the decision of the United States. Everybody is waiting for such decisions," the Ukrainian president remarked. He emphasized the need to target military bases rather than civilian infrastructure to minimize collateral damage.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy disclosed his intention to present a peace plan to President Biden at their next meeting. The plan focuses on ensuring Ukraine's security and determining its geopolitical standing. Zelenskyy noted that he would also share this proposal with both Trump and Harris.
When pressed by Zakaria on how the war could end, with neither side achieving a total victory, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of attaining a position of strength. He emphasized, "It's when you're very strong. When you're very strong. And the other side knows that you're very strong. And you're as strong as possible to make influence on his society."
Ukraine's President Zelenskyy's perspective adds clarity to Trump's comments on the Russia-Ukraine war, assuaging concerns and reiterating the significance of Ukraine's strength in resolving the ongoing conflict.
