In a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused China of aiding Russia in disrupting the upcoming peace summit. The summit, scheduled to take place at the Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland on June 15-16, aims to address the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict that began in February 2022.
Zelenskyy claimed that Russia was leveraging Chinese influence in Asia to interfere with the peace talks. While he did not provide specific examples, he expressed regret that a powerful country like China could be manipulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. CNBC has reached out to the Chinese embassy in Singapore for comment.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry had previously stated that it would not attend the peace conference due to unmet expectations. Meanwhile, Moscow has neither been invited nor shown interest in the conference, dismissing it altogether. Zelenskyy also accused Russia of using economic threats, such as blockades on agricultural exports, chemical products, and high energy prices, to intimidate other nations. CNBC has reached out to the Russian foreign ministry for comment.
During his speech, Zelenskyy revealed that the summit would mainly focus on three points from Ukraine's 10-point peace plan, first announced in November 2022. These points include nuclear security, food security, and the repatriation of abducted Ukrainian children from Russia. The president stressed the urgency of the situation, expressing concern for the children who are growing up in an environment where they are taught to despise their homeland, while their loved ones await their return.
While Zelenskyy mentioned that 106 nations would send senior-level representatives to the summit, he expressed disappointment at the non-participation of certain world leaders. Notably, President Joe Biden's attendance from the United States remains unconfirmed, although Zelenskyy mentioned they have confirmed their participation at a high level.
Zelenskyy expressed the need for support from Asian countries and highlighted his meetings with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during his visit. He encouraged Singapore's leader to personally participate in the summit and called for political, humanitarian, and civilian support rather than military assistance. The Ukrainian president emphasized that these elements form the foundation of their peace formula and have grown into a global peace summit. He implored each leader and country to demonstrate their commitment to peace, ensuring that agreed-upon measures are effectively implemented and preventing Russia from derailing the path to ending the war.
As tensions persist between Russia and Ukraine, the international community watches closely to see if the peace summit will yield a significant breakthrough in resolving the conflict.
