Regional officials have confirmed an attempted "breakthrough of the border" and provided details of the situation.
According to reports from the Mash and Shot Telegram channels, approximately 200 Ukrainian soldiers were deployed near the Nekhoteyevka checkpoint, with another 300 near the Shebekino checkpoint. Allegedly, Russian border guards have fired upon these Ukrainian forces. The Shot channel claims that the attack on Nekhoteyevka was repelled but disputes the Mash account of fighting in Shebekino. Instead, it suggests that Russian forces crossed into the Ukrainian town of Vovchansk in the neighboring Kharkiv region.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the Governor of Belgorod region, has confirmed the attempt to breach the border, but has downplayed the severity of the threat. He stated that, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, the situation on the border remains "difficult but controlled." Gladkov also reported Ukrainian attacks on three border villages, including shelling in Petrovka, situated less than 10 kilometers from Nekhoteyevka.
At the time of reporting, Russia's Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the reported border clashes. However, they have confirmed the interception and shooting down of multiple drones over the Belgorod region. The Ukrainian authorities have not officially addressed the reports either, but it is worth noting that they previously delayed acknowledging an incursion into the neighboring Kursk region in August 6.
According to sources, the Ukrainian forces stationed in Nekhoteyevka are estimated to be of similar strength to those present during the initial minutes of the Kursk incursion, as reported by the Kremlin-funded broadcaster RT, based on information from the military Telegram channel Voyennaya Khronika.
The situation at the border between Ukraine and Russia remains tense, with the reported attacks on border posts and alleged cross-border movements. Both sides have yet to issue official statements or comment on the recent incidents. The international community will be closely monitoring the situation for any further developments.
