In a bold and ambitious move, Ukrainian kamikaze drones conducted a series of precision strikes against Russian-controlled territory, resulting in significant damage to military bases and energy infrastructure. The attacks, which occurred on the night of June 20-21, targeted air defenses in Crimea as well as regions in mainland Russia.

The Ukrainian drones overwhelmed Russian air and sea defenses, evading complete destruction and causing heavy fires, damage, and casualties at multiple locations, according to reports from both official and social media sources. A total of 70 drones attacked targets in Crimea, while another 43 drones targeted the Krasnodar Krai region in southwestern Russia. In a surprising development, two drones even reached a Volgograd oil refinery, hundreds of kilometers away to the east.

Despite Russian officials claiming that all aerial targets were successfully shot down, evidence from various sources contradicted this narrative. Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev of Russian-occupied Crimea alleged that a heating plant near a bus station and an administrative building in an oil refinery were hit by a "massive attack" carried out by the Ukrainian military.

Russian defense command later confirmed that four people were injured in the attack in Krasnodar region, where debris from a falling Ukrainian drone triggered a grass fire at the Ilsk oil refinery. Additionally, satellite images showcased the damage caused by a drone strike at the Yeisk airfield in Crimea, along with reports of heavy fires burning at the location.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that kamikaze drones successfully hit five oil refineries in southwest Russia, along with air defense early-warning systems in the Bryansk region and Crimea. The extent of the damage caused is yet to be determined, but confirmed hits include the Enemskiy oil refinery in Russia's Adygea region.

This recent wave of drone attacks follows Ukraine's ongoing campaign to degrade Russian fuel production through precision strikes. By early April, it had already disrupted at least 15 percent of Russian capacity, according to Western news reports.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian forces have been steadily increasing the scale and pace of their drone attacks against Russian targets since early 2024. Their primary focus has been on Russian oil processing infrastructure and air defense systems in Crimea and western Russia.

The Ukrainian Army General Staff has declared that drone strikes will continue, indicating a sustained effort to undermine Russian military capabilities. As the conflict intensifies, the efficacy of Russia's once-feared air defense network in the Black Sea region is being called into question, further highlighting the evolving dynamics of the Russo-Ukraine war.
