The images, captured on Wednesday, depict the aftermath of attacks on airbases in north-western and central Russia, showing 12 aircraft either damaged or destroyed.
In a detailed operation lasting 18 months, Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted 41 strategic bombers, with claims that "at least" 13 were destroyed. Ukrainian authorities released nearly five minutes of drone footage, displaying attacks on airbases located in Olenya, Ivanovo, Dyagilevo, and Belaya. Although the footage cuts off before explosions are visible, fires are observable in the background at several sites, indicating that aircraft were hit.
The attack came as a shock, with no visible defensive measures from Russian forces during the strikes. Many aircraft at the targeted airbases were covered in tires, presumably a Russian strategy to safeguard against drone attacks. However, the footage shows some planes loaded with cruise missiles and fully fueled, suggesting they were ready for missions.
Satellite imagery from Maxar reveals extensive damage, notably at Olenya and Belaya airbases. Olenya, a significant airbase in north-west Russia, showed five aircraft with damage or entirely destroyed. Videos show drones approaching several aircraft at this site, including Tu-95 and Tu-22M strategic bombers, the production of which ceased in the early 1990s.
At Belaya airbase, images show seven planes impacted by the strikes, including three Tu-95s and four Tu-22s. Drone footage captured drones positioning themselves adjacent to aircraft fuel tanks, prior to further fires breaking out across the base.
Ivanovo airbase saw efforts to target two A50-AWACS planes, used for early warning and control, identified by their large radar systems. Previous conflicts had already seen Ukraine shoot down two such aircraft earlier this year. However, current footage has not confirmed damage to these planes.
Lastly, footage from Dyagilevo airbase in the Ryazan region indicates attempts to target three Tu-22 bombers. The extent of damage at this site remains unclear due to inconclusive footage and satellite images.
These attacks demonstrate a high level of tactical preparation and execution by Ukrainian forces, significantly impacting Russian air capabilities.
