A Russian oil depot in the town of Azov, located in the Rostov region, continues to burn after being targeted in a drone attack by Ukraine more than two days ago. The June 18 attack resulted in the ignition of multiple oil storage tanks, causing significant damage to the depot's infrastructure.

Vasily Golubev, the governor of the Rostov region, expressed the challenges faced by emergency services in containing the raging flames. The targeted oil depot, known as DonTerminal and Azovproduct, had processed approximately 220,000 tons of fuel as of May this year.

The Security Service of Ukraine claimed responsibility for the drone attack, stating that it was carried out early on Tuesday. This incident is part of Ukraine's ongoing retaliation against Russian infrastructure in response to the invasion. Previous attacks included the destruction of the Crimea bridge, a vital route for Russia's land access to the peninsula.

Reports indicate that this is not an isolated incident, as at least 40 Russian oil depots and refineries have been attacked by Ukraine since the start of the year. Ukrainian officials justify these attacks as essential in their war efforts. In March, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna declared Russian oil refineries as legitimate military targets due to their support for Russian forces in Ukraine.

In recent developments, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined conditions for a permanent ceasefire in Ukraine. These conditions include Kyiv halting all attempts to join NATO and relinquishing control of several eastern Ukraine regions to Russian forces. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated his commitment to continue fighting until all disputed regions of Ukraine are liberated.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of abating, with both sides engaging in retaliatory attacks. The situation remains tense, with potential implications for the stability of the region. For any further updates on the Russia-Ukraine war, please contact LiveNews@newsweek.com.
